Not like this in my day ……………

Years ago when i was a ‘teenager’ we lived in a small village in Nottinghamshire.  My father was stationed at the airforce camp so I wasn’t classed as a local but via the school bus, church and youth club I did get to know some of the youngsters.  Saturday was the day (because nobody went out on school nights except to the youth club on Wednesday evening) I’d meet some of them in a cafe on the High Street.  Not a greasy spoon type but not posh either.  It’s one deciding factor as a meeting place where my generation was concerned was that it had a juke box 🙂

Not that far from where I live now there is a nice little coffee shop.  It’s a lovely place to meet with friends – there’s an assortment of seating indoors and out in the garden.  Inside you’ll find little round bistro type tables and chairs, comfy couches with low tables for your food and drink ( ideal for little kids) there are wooden benches and solid tables that cater for ‘groups’ as well as along one wall there are upholstered benches with tables that suit some of the larger sized ladies because they can ‘spread out’.  And because it’s at Montrose, set in the foothills of The Dandenongs there is a wood burning heater that feels so good and welcoming when it’s cold and chilly outside in the winter (or a spring that has been feeling like winter)

Now as well as coffees and teas of all shapes and sizes catering for all needs and wants they have snacky type goods (cakes pastries sandwiches) – things you can enjoy with those teas and coffees BUT their claim to fame are the handmade chocolates the little company has specialised in for years.  In fact they describe their coffees shops as ‘cafe style chocolate shops’   And along with your order you are offered one of their delights – ooh yummy.

So as I said it’s a great place to meet up with friends – not so much for ladies who lunch but those who enjoy good company along with a few laughs.  Manners are adhered to – small sips from the cup, small nibbles taken of food and especially no elbows on the table. 🙂

Some days we have company – more than can sit at our little table so they have to spread out onto one of the large wooden ones. Yes,  we let some of the old fellas come along – they enjoy their own company, happy and relaxed talking of shared times gone by!  Usually about ‘when we were young lads’ – mainly all things air force with flying thingies thrown in for good measure.  They don’t always stay in the past, sometimes up to date topics arise.  Aches pains pensions – oh and what’s going to win the Melbourne Cup (which will be run next week) Not sure about the manners part – look at all that slouching and elbows on the table.  Some mothers would not be happy if they saw that LOL

One of my friends mentioned this ‘us and them’ look that day and said her parents would not have been happy at us (ladies) being excluded as it wasn’t like that in their day.  It might have looked that way but it certainly didn’t feel that way.  Oh and that group in the background isn’t me and my ladies but another lot of ‘mature age coffee drinkers’lol

That need to meet and communicate with other like company seems to be relevant no matter what age (or sex) we are.

What are you musing about on this Monday

  1. The cakes look very yummy
I think it’s best if the gals are own one table. And the guys on another.
I really don’t want to hear about anything with an engine or about their aches and pains.
I go out to forget mine!
I’d much rather talk about things we talk about. Craft, grandkids, food.
    You know much more important

    1. ‘You know much more important’. LOL 🙂
I must admit I try not to talk/let on about the aches and pains. It’s almost like a competition with some of them!

    1. Yes Marie – it’s a nice comfy place to be. When the weather is good (and warmer) it’s great outside as well. I must try to get some outdoor shots sometime

  2. When I grew up the different sexes at social events were very segregated. It is much less so now. My English born partner says it was never like that in England and is a very Australian thing.

    1. That’s true Andrew. We noticed when we first arrived in early 1970s. English people (couples) always stuck like glue to each other whilst here the men talked together and the ladies congregated together elsewhere. Might have originated from years gone by when each sex wanted to know/grilled new people in town, about what was going on elsewhere in the world.

  3. It looks like a nice place to gather. Up here on Tamborine Mountain there are many such outlets, too, where friends get together for a chat, a laugh over coffee or drink of their choice. Around the corner a bit from where I live is The Coffee Plantation (I mentioned it in a previous blog a couple of months ago)…they grow their own coffee to fill their coffee machines. It’s nice coffee, too.

Thanks for visiting my blog, Cathy. I hope I see you again. 🙂

    1. ‘Tis indeed Lee. There are so many little places out there that have a charm of their own. We just have to find them.
We’ve visited coffee plantations in other Queensland places – there is a small place (by comparison to some of the huge great estates)in Prosepine that grows and has the most delighful cafe complete with resident cocky and labrador that we frequent each time we are in the area.

  4. I remember the segregation. Sometimes desirable, often not.
I hear you on the aches and pains front too. Even my own get boring, and I would (usually) rather not talk about it.
Loving the look of that cafe though. And handmade chocolate is a decadent treat.

    1. I laugh inwardly when I hear the men talking about their ailments. Yes some of them do have problems but some are the usual byproducts from aging and to hear them going on about them you’d think they were at death’s door.

  5. Slouching and elbows on the table is the only way I know how to sit. but I’m not a man. Where would I fit in?
It does sound like a lovely way to spend an afternoon, the chocolates look delicious.

    1. They were delicous River – made all the more by the company. My mother tried to teach me table manners but her downfall was she never practised what she preached. I do remember the constant ‘take your elbows off the table’ even though she never told me why lol

  6. I guess all places are like that now. People seem to have or I should say make the time to chat and socialize which is good. Our grandparents days not many lived that old to just enjoy life as it should be. They worked very hard and did not have the conveniences we are enjoying now We all have aches and pains but grateful we can get out. Not many people are fortunate to have the good health to go out and about. I am thankful for every day good or bad. I just buried my Mom who was 100 years old a couple of weeks ago and she had a good life with us. Not many people today have been that fortunate..

Yes we should enjoy life while we can.

  7. Hi Cathy, As you know, all of us in Canada have groups that gather for coffee at Tim Horton’s (a coffee and doughnut chain). My dad meets up with his coffee gang just about every day now. It was just men for a few years but gradually my mom and other women joined in. They first met at the coffee shop, and over time, started attending other events in the community together, like church suppers and Christmas concerts.

    1. I used to laugh at how small the Tim Hortons was in Berwick – but somehow they used to fit an abnormal amount of men in there during the morning. What fun that your mum and her friends ‘gatecrashed’ the men’s quiet time and brought them in line. Made model citizens of them 🙂

  8. I think I almost prefer female companions in a cafe – as far as the conversations go.
Looks like a nice place – that free chocolate probably brings in a lot more orders – sure looks like good stuff!

  9. Last Monday (sorry behind with reading) was basically my only free “do my own thing” day but I did manage to delete the mid-week event…Thursday I was at a kiosk lane way type cafe at the Mall, catching up on at least a years worth of news…lost contact with someone.

It’s Saturday now, and I have today off but tomorrow I’m off to an interesting event that goes by the name “Zoo group” – it’s not actually at the Zoo but it’s a hop, skip, jump from there…it’s a fibrecraft group.

Looks like next week, might be less full well in the workday week 🙂
